This small land-locked country in Southern Africa, formerly known as Nyasaland, and has been nicknamed ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ for its friendly inhabitants. Malawi’s three distinct regions, namely North Malawi, Central Malawi (home to the capital Lilongwe) and South Malawi offer tourists a diverse African experience. Malawi is probably most famous for Lake Malawi, situated in the central region of the country. The freshwater lake is not only a beautiful natural tourist attraction, but also forms an integral part of Malawi’s economy thanks to the large fishing industry.
Malawi is also a fantastic bird-watching destination, with over 650 species throughout the various landscapes. Malawi’s national parks, including Liwonde National Park which is the oldest of the country’s parks, offer multiple opportunities for game viewing.
